Birthplace: Portsmouth, Virginia, USACharles Hugo, better known as Chad Hugo, is one half of the music production and writing duo The Neptunes. His partner is Pharrell Williams, who has produced numerous number 1 hit tracks for megastars such as Mystikal, Jay-Z, NSYNC, Britney Spears, and Nelly.
Hugo, a Filipino American who is the son of a retired Navy officer, was born in the South Hampton Roads city of Portsmouth, grew up in nearby Virginia Beach, and met Williams in the seventh grade during a summer program for gifted students. The two began working together, mixing beats and playing in various live bands. In 1992, while the two were attending different high schools in Virginia Beach, they sold their first song, “Rump Shakur,” to Wreckx-n-Effect. They subsequently scored songwriting and production assignments with artists such as Snoop Dogg and No Doubt.
In August 2002, The Neptunes were named Producers of the Year at both The Source Awards and the Billboard Awards. The album The Neptunes Present.. Clones was then released, debuting at number one in August 2003.
“Frontin’” was a big summer hit and kept Williams’ momentum running up to the release of Hugo and Williams’ second funk/rock-oriented N.E.R.D album, released in March 2004.
Mr. Hugo, I believe that you,along with Mr.Williams,are some of the
best, if not THE best producer’s of all time. I really appreciate your work. Your unique sound which includes but is not limited to: your undeniable symphonic excecution, not to mention your CRAZY drum patterns,is one of the reasons I am an aspiring producer as well.
I am a 26 year old monitor tech(dispatcher) @ Mobile Infirmary Hospital, in Mobile Al. There is no musical exposure here in this city, so it makes you wonder,… can this be done, seeing as how coming from here it all looks like a pipe dream. More so the reason of my rare disbelief of this goal,is that my sound is also(as far as Mobile is conserned) somewhat different. Which is why I say thank you 4 your music,it is because of the Neptunes that I know there is a future in “Pushing the envelope out of the box”. Thank you both for the music and keep em coming. chad along with pharrell are very talented musicians .I totally respect them because money and sucess has’nt changed them.Their passion and drive of making beats still carries on .I think its fair to say that the neptunes are the greatest music production the world has ever seen,simply due to the fact that they make music from the heart and also cover a wide range of music genres.People seem to hate pharrell because hes under the lime light more then chad hugo but what people need to understand is that chad is a family guy with a wife and two kids so therefore the lime light doesnt appeal to him because he is trying to give his family a normal life without the paparazzis all in his face. Pharrell on the other hand likes the publicity to some extent and therefore he uses that to his advantage such as promoting his clothes line and footwear.Pharrell is the publicist for the neptunes without pharrell showing his face in some the videos they produced the neptunes wounld’nt be well known to this extent.

I make tracks too (like everybody does now) and since I heard Kelis’ album I been inspired by the melodies (most of all) that yall come up with. The only thing is, I wish I could tell who does what.

Dood ur jus an inspiring ass person. u got a family and u are one the most sought after people in the music industry. how do u balance? i bet pharrell envies u. haha. i know i do. wuts funny is that i saw that same discovery channel show on i forgot what u callit but it reminds me of the times when id be sittin in my room with nothin to do on a hot summer day while the suns setting vibin to kelis, nerd albums jus losing myself in the music. id make storys and would have some crazy ideas for every song. thats what i am to do when i make my music. im not an aspiring producer for the reason that i am not seeking monetary rewards but i do music because i feel like im tellin a story or giving u a feeling of happiness sadness, anger, highness. haha. i wish i could meet u and gnarls and pharrell. i feel like wed get into some heavy ass conversations cuz i feel were on some parrallel thinking shit.

Seeing sounds not only shows your influences as listeners, but collages both Fly or Die and In Search Of.. to create such a solid album. Every album and song release that comes from the neptunes/n*e*r*d is just another reason to dance and love life occurences. There are few artists that provide the world with relative and feel good music, and you do it without the spotlight. Theres a difference between art and sound, but your hardwork has created art through sound. I will continue to expose the world to your music for the sake of the future of music. I’m looking forward to seeing this new album outsell anything released in the past decade and the Grammy’s will just be icing on the cake for your already impeccable careers.
