Pharrell Williams is ruining the reputation of The Neptunes.
Of course, I’m probably one of the only people that feels this way, but there’s no way Chad Hugo has had any part in a lot of the Neptunes’ recent output, Missy Elliot’s “On & On” and Q-Tip’s abysmal “For The Nasty” come to mind immediately. The Neptunes are known for quirky yet melodic songs that don’t eschew traditional song structure. I’d venture to say they’re one of the few songwriters in modern music that still write actual bridges.
But songs like this new single from Pharrell’s upcoming album are The Neptunes…err… Pharrell at his worse. It starts off promising with a great horn riff but quickly loses steam with a boring two note bassline. If the song had built more upon that intro instead of taking that right turn at Albuquerque I’d be more apt to say that I really like this song. But as of right now, it’s just ok.
Gwen Stefani makes a pointless appearance on the hook and really could’ve been replaced by some no name female which probably would’ve saved ‘Rell some money on his recording budget… but i’m sure he doesn’t care about that.
So yeah…
